Internship Job Description

Your internship will provide the opportunities to build a relationship with the company, network with other people in the field and gain valuable first-hand experience.  Although not all internships lead to positions within GRMHA, they do give you the knowledge and experience you need to be confident in your career endeavors.This internship will provide you with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, with potential opportunities for special projects depending on your skills.



  • Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, which includes arriving on time for designated work, notifying the Executive Director or their designee of any deviations from the established schedule, and dressing to the standards of the organization and the work being performed.

  • Respect the organization’s reporting structure and follow the policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Communicate effectively with all staff. Accept and apply critiques and suggestions to daily work in an effort to become more productive and/or efficient.

  • Communicate with the Executive Director or their designee any issues that may affect  your performance of assigned responsibilities or the overall success of the experience.

  • Appreciate diversity in all of its forms and respect various social and political viewpoints; do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, religion, age, nation/ethnic origin, disability, or sexual orientation.

  • Uphold the GRMHA's code of conduct and act in an ethical manner during the internship.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Must be detail oriented and possess excellent follow up skills. Working knowledge of computer application software (training will be provided if needed). Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision


Interns will have to perform some administrative duties. Depending on the area of work, administrative duties generally include answering phones, greeting consumers, data entry and other paperwork. Since the Alliance is the point of first contact for many people seeking help, answering phones is a critical component of our organization. Total supervision is required for this task. The amount of time spent on administrative tasks will be minimal.

  • Keeping the office environment organized and covering tasks of other workers in the office are also duties left up to the intern with training provided by the Alliance. The education gained from intern "admin" tasks would be learning new software applications, communication and problem-solving skills, and networking in the office.

  • Interns will participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions and provide input where possible.

  • Interns will shadow all departments and learn how each operates. The departments are: Adult Advocacy, Child Advocacy, Peer Support Department, Community Action Team and the Consumer Family Survey Team.

  • Interns will participate where allowed in all intakes for new consumers for services from the agency.

  • Intern will serve on the Berks County Suicide Task Force and the Task Force for Human Trafficking.

  • Intern will sit in on support groups to learn support group facilitation skills.



The intern is supervised by the Executive Director who has 39 years of experience in the human service field. He has started 3 non-profits for mental health services, another non-profit for end of life care and is the owner of a home health agency for the past 29 years.



Interns must submit to a child abuse and criminal background checks. If they are not available, agency will obtain clearances at the agencies expense.
